Phuket has fast become one of the most sophisticated travel destinations in the world. Not only Thais, but people from all over the world have for years loved the island for its world-class hotels, resorts, villas, friendly people and magnificent nature.
Large enough to entertain visitors for weeks, yet small enough to get around easily, the island caters to a variety of people, from groups of friends wanting to explore the island's many recreational activities and happening night life to newly married couples on their romantic honeymoon. The island is also welcoming more and more families and many of the large resorts have fun programmes to keep the little ones entertained.
In the wake of Phuket's booming tourism industry the island has seen its property industry growing as more and more people view Phuket not just as a place to holiday but also a place to live, retire and invest. Many of the expats who now call Phuket their home used to come to the island as tourists, but fell in love with the beauty and attractive lifestyle on offer and decided to stay. Given Phuket's reputation as a popular tourist destination, many investors have come to Phuket to build luxury homes and private villas, which they use for part of the year and them rent out to guests to cover costs and generate income.
On Phuket, as with most other places, location is everything when choosing to build or buy a Phuket luxury home and the same applies for those looking for a luxury residence to rent on holiday. The island has an elongated shape, with the long sides facing east and west, making it a perfect spot to view spectacular sunsets and sunrises. The shores of the island are very uneven which affords many private villas spectacular vistas from many elevated points.
The Andaman Sea is home to countless small islands, especially in Phang Nga Bay, which is famous for its limestone cliffs and world renowned James Bond islands. The western part of Phuket is by far the most developed, with notable beaches and areas including Patong, Kamala, Surin, Karon and Kata. These areas are now home to a wide choice of luxurious holiday homes for rent and remain the most popular – and expensive – places to invest. With land prices having increased exponentially, many investors are now looking at the east coast and Phang Nga for investment opportunities. This means more luxury homes properties are springing up in alternative locations, offering rental guests an even wider choice of exceptional properties.
The east side of the island, although not nearly as developed, offers some great deals for buyers and renters alike. Some people find the areas on the west coast too crowded and developed, but there are still some excellent areas on the east coast which afford more privacy and a feeling of seclusion. Phuket town is also located on the east side of the island. The town centre is an eclectic mix of Chinese and Muslim cultures, which have converged here for more than a hundred years.
