Phuket Guide

Phuket Beaches

One of the reasons Phuket has become such a popular destination with international travellers is surely the idyllic, white sand beaches that pepper the island’s coastline. From the thriving shoreline of Patong Beach, to the more laid back feel of Kata Beach, to completely undeveloped bays, Phuket has it all.

This guide will provide you with some insight into exactly what kind of beach destinations Phuket has to offer…

Patong Beach

Patong is one of the most developed beach areas on the island, with the widest spread of bars, restaurants and shops. However, this can mean big crowds in peak tourist season, and Patong’s reputation has suffered in recent years as a result of the wild tales of its vibrant party scene.

Yet despite what you may have heard about Patong, it remains a popular resort destination for many families that are vacationing on Phuket. Patong beach occupies 3km of Phuket’s coastline, and boasts soft sand and inviting blue waters. Deckchairs and umbrellas line the main beach area and provide a perfect place to relax and soak up some rays while you are on the Phuket beach. As well as the nearby bars, you will also find a multitude of shops, stalls and other recreational activity centres to keep you occupied if you are not content to spend all day lounging! view Patong Travel Guide

Kata Beach

Kata Beach is situated on the southern side of Phuket and is divided into Kata Yai and Kata Noi, and both offer a more laid back atmosphere than you could expect to find at Patong. Kata Yai is the larger of the two beaches, and affords picturesque views of Koh Pu island at the northern end.

Half of the beach is bordered by the road, whilst the other half is dominated by beachside resorts like Club Med, which occupies a large space towards the northern end of the beach. Kata Noi is home to few hotels and a wonderful beach with little development in the vicinity.

Over the years Kata Beach has become increasingly popular with families, chiefly due to its small size and cosy atmosphere. There are a few shops, restaurants and bars in the vicinity of Kata Centre and between Kata Yai and Kata Noi to accommodate the needs of visitors. Kata is generally thought of as a destination that offers the best of both worlds, catering to those who want some access to local facilities, but without the business of Patong. view Kata Travel Guide

Karon Beach

At 4km long, Karon Beach stretches for so far along Phuket’s shoreline it rarely feels crowded with visitors. Situated just south of Patong, the beach offers the exactly the white fringe and tranquil, warm waters that you would expect from a tropical island.

The few large resorts that are located in the vicinity but are so spread out that it does not feel like a busy tourist area, and the beach usually remains a quiet location. However, it is important to bring your sun cream and umbrella to Karon, as the beach offers little to no natural shade. Despite being home to a coral reef at the southern tip of the beach, Karon offers fewer watersports and leisure activities than Patong or Kata.

Although Karon is a good destination for those who enjoy swimming, they should beware large waves and strong rip currents during the island’s rainy season. view Karon Travel Guide

Rawai Beach

Before the boom in tourism on Phuket, Rawai Beach is where the local community would flock to in order to enjoy the seaside atmosphere.

The beach itself is perhaps not as pretty as other Phuket beaches, but boasts fantastic views and some of the best seafood restaurants on the whole of Phuket. Home to many small boats, the beach faces Phang Nga Bay and is a great destination for swimmers. The eastern end of the beach is also home to a small Sea Gypsy village where you can find a bustling little fish market. Local handicrafts and an array of traditional Thai snacks are also on sale here.

The viewpoint at Laem Prom Thep, the southernmost tip of the island, is a particularly popular spot with an old lighthouse for those who fancy a stunning view of sunset over the Andaman Sea. view Rawai Travel Guide

Kamala Beach

Approximately a 10 minute drive from Patong, Kamala is an ideal location for those who just want to kick back and relax. Kamala is one of the more peaceful and serene Phuket beaches, and is certainly a world away from the hustle and bustle of Patong. There are a few guesthouses and resorts in the area, but the beach not highly developed. A number of Phukets best villas occupy the headlands above kamala, offering stunning views from their rooms and terraces. view Kamala Travel Guide

Bang Tao Beach

Bang Tao is one of the longest beaches to decorate Phuket’s varied coastline. The area is dominated by the Laguna Phuket complex, which comprises five luxury hotels and an 18-hole golf course. Despite this, it is still easy enough to find a quiet place to relax and enjoy the tropical atmosphere.

The southern end of the beach is home to most of the development, so a journey to the northern end will afford you some more peace and privacy if this is what you prefer. There are a number of shops in the local area, as well as those situated inside the Laguna resort complex. Canal Village, located inside Laguna Phuket, contains approximately 30 shops where clothes and local handicrafts are on sale. Cherng Talay, a nearby town, also has a few shops, as well as a bustling market. view Bang Tao Travel Guide
