Andaman news Culture and Carnivals

Ranong was the first of the five Andaman provinces to showcase its unique culture as part of a five-art carnival series this month.

The city hosted the first Andaman Carnival to show off a few of its lesser-known cultural treasures, with the celebrations launched by Supawat Sadka, Ranong’s Vice Governor and Sommai Prijasilpa, Phuket’s Vice Governor.

With a budget of THB8 million (US$247,000), the event in Ranong was expected to attract more than 10,000 visitors, and before the carnival, the Vice Governor emphasized the value of the event.

"It doesn't matter whether we meet our target number of visitors of make a profit," he said. "The main point is to familiarise people with what we have to offer," he added.

Following the festivities in Ranong, carnivals will also be held in Phuket, Krabi, Phang Nga and Trang province. Krabi will promote historic artifacts, Phang Nga will focus on its sea gypsies, Trang on local traditions and Phuket on Sino-Portuguese heritage.

Phuket’s rich history is most evident in it's Old Town, where many of the buildings reflect the island’s intriguing past. The island's Chinese roots date back hundreds of years to when traders from the mainland married local women on the island, giving rise to what is now known as Peranakan or “Baba” culture.

One of the best places to explore this fascinating side of Phuket’s history is at the island’s newly converted Baba Museum, which will soon open within the Old Post Office. The building is over 100 years old and will house relics, clothing, furniture and tradition art from Phuket's Baba culture. The THB50 million (US$ 1.5 million) conversion is being overseen by the Thai Peranakan Association as a way to bring the island's history to life for visitors.

Visitors interested in Phuket’s Baba culture may also enjoy a visit to Phuket’s Thai Baba wedding showcase, which runs from 21-23 June. Events will include a traditional tea ceremony at Hongsyok Mansion and processions along Thalang Road, providing a fascinating insight into the local culture and traditions.
