Sailing Scene Growing on Phuket

Phuket is gearing up once again to host one of Southeast Asia’s premier sailing events in December – the annual King’s Cup Regatta.

This year marks the 29th edition of the regatta, which is widely praised as one of the standout sporting events in the region and attracts hundreds of professional and amateur competitors.

This year, the event will return to Kata Beach Resort and Spa from December 5-12, hosting international racing contests in which more than 150 crafts will take part.

“The diversity of craft, international complement of crews and the spectacle of the post-race parties make this regatta a stand-out attraction in the region,” says Kevin Whitcraft, president of the event’s organizing committee. “As we stand but one year away from the magical ‘Pearl’ milestone of three decades of the King’s Cup, we’re very proud of the contribution this magnificent event makes to Phuket and Thailand, and to the sport of sailing globally.”

This year, five days of racing will take place in the stunning waters of the Andaman Sea and the event is expected to draw crews from over 40 countries, including USA, Australia, the UK, Russia, Japan, Singapore and China.

Another reason that Phuket – the island known as the ‘gem’ of the Andaman Sea – has made a mark on the region’s sailing scene is its choice of well-equipped and serviced marinas. The Royal Phuket Marina, Boat Lagoon, Yacht Haven and the Ao Po Grande are all situated just a short sail from countless charming islands, all of which are popular with yachting enthusiasts.

In addition, the island already hosts the annual PIMEX International Boat Show at Royal Phuket Marina in January, and is set to launch a second sailing expo next February when it hosts the first Thailand Yacht Show, an event forecast to become a key regional platform for global yacht charter and brokerage industries. More than 40 berths have already been booked since the official launch of the event just two months ago.

“The Thailand Yacht show promises to become the most important in Asia over the next few years in our view,” said a representative from Lee Marine, a major local player in Thailand’s boating industry. “With the recent charter regulation changes in Thailand, big yachts will now come and stay longer on Phuket, so a charter yacht show integrated in a large scale boat show will complement this initiative perfectly. We will be presenting our biggest ever fleet of boats at any show in our 18-year history.”
