Phuket launches high season

Phuket kick-started its peak tourism season this month with a lively parade through the streets of the island's tourist capital, Patong. The Governor of Phuket, Khun Nisit Jansomwong, led officials to watch the impressive street procession on Patong’s beach road. The carnival also included a stage performance and a firework display to honour His Majesty the King of Thailand. Following a large-scale beach clean-up operation across the island through August, September and October, the carnival this year followed a ‘Blissful Beach’ theme, in support of the efforts of local authorities to remove illegal business operators from the island's beaches. Other highlights of the 3-day carnival included a chef’s competition and a variety of musical stage performances, with Thai country singer Tonkao R-Siam being one of the biggest stars to perform. Jazz fans were also treated to the carnival’s ‘Jazz International Music’ concert, which featured Thailand’s Nueng-Jakkawarn, South Korea’s JSFA and Deana Collazo from Cuba. Visitors indulged in local street food to complement the many live performances, and were also able to purchase handmade souvenirs from pop-up stalls, which were allowed on the main beach road for the duration of the carnival. The beach clean-up operation also continued alongside the carnival, with divers delving into the depths of the Andaman Sea to collect underwater rubbish. Phuket’s big beach clean-up began in August, when tourism operators on the island co-operated to clean up its stunning natural coastline. The team was dubbed ‘Go Eco Phuket’, and comprised a variety of community groups including representatives from a range of local businesses. Approximately 1000kg of rubbish and debris was removed from the bays of Racha Yai and Racha Noi during August alone. As a result, visitors returning to enjoy their Christmas holidays in Phuket this year will certainly notice a difference in the cleanliness of the beaches during holiday season. Now the beaches have been cleaned up, holiday-makers can look forward even more to a range of water sports and activities off Phuket’s coast. Snorkelling, surfing and wake boarding are some of the most popular activities, although those who prefer a more relaxed beach experience can simply bask beneath the blue skies on pristine beaches next to clear blue waters.
